Analysis & Outlook

Three teams signed new HCs this year and they’re all picking in the top 10. No surprise obviously but the Buffalo Bills fired former HC Dick Jauron mid-season last year.

The Bills’ defense ranked 2nd against the pass but a horrible 30th against the run. They have made some off-season upgrades on defense but as a unit, they must do better. I expect them to add more players on the front seven.

Offensively, the Bills’ new HC Chan Gailey will have to decide whether he sticks with his current QBs, Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick, or whether he pursues a young QB in the draft. Personally, I feel that the Bills have too many fundamental flaws to risk a high pick on an unproven QB. They have needs at O-Line and TE that can help their current QBs perform better. In addition, they’re not expected to bring back WR Terrell Owens so they should think about adding a WR as well.

In the first round, there are a lot of expectations that the Bills will take QB Jimmy Clausen but I think that would be foolish. They are in need of some fundamental upgrades and better candidates would be Ts Bryan Bulaga and Anthony Davis or DT Dan Williams. With a relatively high pick in the second round, I would expect them to target that QB there, most likely Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow, but again, there are some good O-Linemen available if they’re willing to be patient. They could also go with a WR here like Golden Tate or Arrelious Benn. They’ll work the draft in the following rounds looking at a TE, front seven players and O-Linemen.

The Bills are a mess. They’re probably three years away from being somewhat decent and by then, I expect them to have another HC.
